Record Store Day
I’m not really interested in Record Store Day as a whole, mainly because all the limited/hype horse shit flies right in the face of what I want to achieve by running a label. But, I do appreciate the positive impact that a good record shop can have on a small label like ours.

I started Art For Blind around the time that the only indpendent record shop in my home town of Barnsley closed down. The shop was called Casa Disco and stood on Peel Square in the centre of town. It was certainly not a “cool” place but the fact that the owner Steve appeared to be solely interested in music, in particular new music and not in marketing or brand positioning really appealed to me. He was also incredibly supportive of the efforts of a friend of ours attempts to cobble together a compilation of local and not so local DIY bands and went out of his way to promote the CD to the unsuspecting locals.
The second Record Shop that came into my life was Wall of Sound in Huddersfield, which also closed it’s doors for the last time very recently. I would spend a couple of days a week in Huddersfield browsing the copious racks of Wall of Sound rather than attending University in Leeds and looking back it was definitely a better use of my time.

Another shop that I have soft spot for is Record Revivals in Scarborough. At the time I was frequently visiting the place, it was sharing a premises with Mojo’s Music Cafe. The buzz around the place was always great and it seemed like everyone was genuinely enjoying themselves being there, including the people working there which is quite a rarity for a record shop in my experience. Mojo’s / Record Revivals was a great contrast to the unarguably excellent but also cold and austere Jumbo Records in Leeds.
Nowadays I live in Ireland and we have a couple of nice indie record shops making a go of it in these hard times with Wingnut Galway & Waterford and Plugd Records in Cork city where we live. I will no doubt venture down later to see what all this Record Store Day fuss is about..

comóradh

This week marked 6 months since we moved to Cork. Somehow alongside finding work and a place to live we managed to release 4 records, the 4th of which is now available (has been for a few weeks). This is the fourth time we have worked with Saturday’s Kids, this time coming up with another 7”, about which Artrocker said this:
“Nothing to do with a Jam song of the same name, Saturday’s Kids are in fact a post hardcore group from South Wales, who’ve played with Future of The Left, amongst others; on the evidence of ‘Grey on White’ we should be paying attention too. Because with most groups of their type running after clichéd drive time hooks or down the screamo route, this lot have something else; ideas, as well as the brutalistic chops to execute them. Still memorable, the song just shudders with anxiety and unease, it’s twisting, gnarly riffs pursuing you with cyclopean intent, speaking of ennui and frustrated ambition as they linger malevolently and bass rumbles. Horribly good.”
There will be a couple of AFB bands hitting the road at the end of the month. Facel Vega are playing a weekend of shows down:
Friday 30th March - Bristol County Sports Club - w/ Marshall Teller, City Dweller, Mars to Stay & ZYZZYVA
Saturday 31st March - Brixton Community Base w/ No, Woolf & Loveover
Bird Calls are heading to the USA to play a few gigs with Small Bones.
Saturday 31st March - New Orleans, LA - The Tchoup Shop (Moped Garage) w/ Slow Danger Brass Band and The Ghostwood (TBC)
Sunday 1st April - Memphis, TN - The Court House Co-op
Monday 2nd April - Columbus, OH - The Legion of Doom w/ Delay (TBC)
Tuesday 3rd April - Washington, DC - Asefu’s w/ Passing Phases
Wednesday 4th April - Richmond, VA - Strange Matter
Thursday 5th April - Greensboro, NC - TBC
Friday 6th April - Atlanta, GA - WonderRoot
Saturday 7th April - Tallahassee, FL - Franklin Manor w/ Tubers (TBC)
Sunday 8th April - Navarre, FL - BEACH SHOW
Will leave you with these three things we like most about living in Cork:
1: Beamish. I always disliked Stout when I lived in the UK but this stuff is now an integral part of my life.
2: Plugd Records. Not only is it nice to have a bricks and mortar outlet to buy good records from but these lads are collectively behind a lot of the good independent music that happens in Cork and are the first to champion anything or anyone that puts some effort into creating or exhibiting original music here.
3: People waving at you when you are driving on a country a road: It’s just nice isn’t it?
Bird Calls are a three piece emo/punk band from London
If you don’t know who they are then I think it’s about time you check them out!
Their influences include bands such as Fugazi, Brainworms, Tubers and Teenage Cool Kids.
You can listen to their split with Human Hands here

Inserted
Facel Vega – The Body is now officially ready for consumption. The records have been pressed, the inserts printed and those inserts have subsequently been put inside record sleeves. The whole package looks like this:
For those of you who are yet to hear the delights of Facel Vega they are post punk hardcore band from South Wales that sound like this. We would describe their music as reminiscent of bands like Moss Icon and Rites of Spring but please feel free to make your own mind up.
We also received the inserts for the Bird Calls / Human Hands split today so if you are waiting for one of those sending out to you it will arrive soon. You can listen to and order that record here.
The Little Ease tape is days away from completion and will be available soon. These will be limited to 50 copies.
The 4th release of 2012 will be another 7” for Art For Blind’s U21’s Saturday’s Kids. Grey on White will be available mid February. The track Black Pocket is streaming here and will also feature on a CD compilation being lovingly crafted by a friend of ours and his fledgling label Frustrated INC.
If you would like to review or carry any of our records in your distro get in touch.
